This post discusses the pervasive influence of phones on our lives and suggests using physical activities like CrossFit, Jiu Jitsu, and yoga at Gym Force gyms as a way to disconnect and reconnect with ourselves.
Let’s be honest: when was the last time you weren’t thinking about something that involved your phone? Whether it's checking your text messages, scrolling through your social media feeds, or being haunted by that delightful pain-in-the-ass owl from Duolingo, our minds are constantly occupied. And deep down, we know this can’t be good. Sure, the technology that fits in our pockets is amazing. But sometimes, we just need to disconnect.
Not in a "depriving yourself of life's pleasures" kind of way, though. More like a "habit stacking" approach, a concept popularized in James Clear's book, Atomic Habits. The idea is to build new habits by stacking them on top of existing ones. There are a few things we can do to unplug for a bit, and Gym Force gyms offer the perfect opportunities for just that.
It's easy to check your phone while meandering through a random workout at a big-box gym or while mindlessly walking on a treadmill. But you know what you’ll never see? A CrossFitter checking their phone during 'Fran' or trying to sneak a peek at their texts while tackling their 100th burpee. Earbuds? Forget about it. You won’t hear your coach correcting your form with those in. The last thing on anyone’s mind during a grueling WOD is what anyone in the world is saying on Facebook. Trust us.
Walk into any dojo and you won't see anyone checking their email. Why? Because they're too busy trying not to get choked out. Most folks are just trying to make it through class alive. Sure, we might share a pic with our friends afterward, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone using their phone while rolling on the mats. We’re more focused on survival than selfies.
Anyone checking their phone during yoga is missing the entire point. If you can manage to pull off some kind of miracle multitasking during a challenging yoga flow, more power to you. But don’t expect anyone to like you for it. Yoga is about finding your zen, not doom scrolling.
These activities aren’t just about disconnecting from your phone. They’re about connecting with yourself and others. They help you get fitter, learn something new, and improve your long-term physical and mental health. Sure, there are other ways to achieve this—swimming, hunting, skydiving, or even competitive sports. Whatever your thing, keep doing it.
But if you're still searching for a way to unplug, finding a Gym Force gym is an easy way to get started. Our Functional Fitness gyms and BJJ schools offer something rare in today’s society: full disconnection. Come for the workout, stay for the peace of mind.
So, what are you waiting for? Put down your phone, step away from the screen, and find your nearest Gym Force facility. Disconnect to reconnect. Your body and mind will thank you.
